Overview

The A1 Combo pairs the open-frame Bambu Lab A1 with the AMS Lite, a 4-spool filament changer. You get a 256 x 256 x 256 mm build volume, full auto calibration and multi-color printing from the first day.

What it is

The Bambu Lab A1 Combo is the A1 open-frame printer sold together with the AMS Lite, Bambu's 4-spool automatic filament changer for the A1 series. The printer itself is identical to the standalone A1: a bed slinger with a 256 x 256 x 256 mm build volume and full auto calibration. The difference is that multi-color and multi-material printing works out of the box. The Combo box includes the AMS Lite body, stand, four rotary spool holders and PTFE tubes.

Key specs that matter

  • Build volume: 256 x 256 x 256 mm.
  • Multi-color: AMS Lite included, up to 4 filaments in one print. Bambu says the AMS Lite uses RFID to match print settings for Bambu filament automatically.
  • Motion: up to 500 mm/s toolhead speed and 10,000 mm/s² acceleration.
  • Hot end: all-metal, up to 300 °C, 0.4 mm stainless steel nozzle included.
  • Bed: up to 100 °C with a textured PEI plate included.
  • Calibration: automatic Z-offset, bed leveling, vibration compensation and nozzle pressure calibration for each job.
  • Sensors and connectivity: run-out, tangle and odometry sensors, power loss recovery, a timelapse camera up to 1080p, Wi-Fi, Bambu-Bus, microSD and a 3.5-inch touchscreen.
  • Noise: listed by Bambu as low as 49 dB.

Who it suits

The Combo suits buyers who already know they want color: tabletop figures, signs, keychains, labeled organizers and color-coded functional parts. It also makes sense for anyone who wants to print with a soluble or breakaway support material in one slot while printing the model in another. Since the Combo ($359 on sale) costs less than the A1 ($259) plus a separate AMS Lite ($159) on the US store, the Combo is the better value for anyone leaning toward multi-color work.

What to know before buying

Multi-color printing on any single-nozzle printer purges filament at each color change, which adds time and creates waste. Check the slicer's filament estimate for jobs with many color swaps.

The A1 supports only one AMS Lite. Bambu's FAQ is clear that the maximum is 4 colors, and stacking units for 16 colors is a feature of the enclosed P series instead. Full-size AMS units can connect only through the AMS HUB accessory.

Materials are the main limit. Bambu lists PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA as ideal, while ABS, ASA, PC, PA and fiber-filled filaments are not recommended, and it advises against enclosing the A1. Abrasive filaments need a hardened steel nozzle. Plan desk space for both the printer and the AMS Lite on its stand, or use Bambu's top-mount guide on the wiki to place the AMS Lite on the frame. Bambu's store FAQ also notes a January 2024 heatbed cable recall, and says units sold after January 30, 2024 include the fix.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • The AMS Lite is included, so 4-color and multi-material printing works from the first print without extra purchases.
  • Bundled pricing on the US store is lower than buying the A1 and AMS Lite separately at their typical prices.
  • The 256 x 256 x 256 mm build volume gives room for large single-piece prints.
  • Bambu says the printer runs Z-offset, bed leveling, vibration and nozzle pressure calibration automatically before each job.
  • The store lists operating noise as low as 49 dB, which suits homes and classrooms.
  • RFID-tagged Bambu filament is recognized by the AMS Lite, which sets matching print settings automatically.

Cons

  • Only one AMS Lite is supported, so the A1 Combo cannot expand past 4 filaments per print.
  • Every color change purges filament, which adds print time and waste on prints with many swaps.
  • The open frame means ABS, ASA, PC and PA are listed as not recommended by Bambu.
  • The AMS Lite sits beside the printer on a stand, so the setup needs more desk space than the printer alone.
  • Carbon fiber and other abrasive filaments require swapping the stainless steel nozzle for hardened steel first.
  • There is no enclosure or chamber heating, so engineering materials for large parts are out of reach.

Frequently asked questions

How many colors can the A1 Combo print?

Up to 4 filaments per print using the included AMS Lite. Bambu's FAQ states the A1 supports only one AMS Lite, so you cannot add more units for 16 colors.

Can the A1 Combo print ABS or ASA?

Bambu lists ABS and ASA as not recommended on the A1 because the open frame can cause warping and weak layer bonding on larger parts. Small, low-infill parts may work, but an enclosed printer is the better choice for these materials.

Does the AMS Lite work with third-party filament?

Yes, it accepts 1.75 mm filament on spools 40 to 68 mm wide with a 53 to 58 mm hole, though Bambu lists generic TPU, PETG-CF, ABS and ASA as unsupported in the AMS Lite. RFID auto-setup only works with Bambu's own filament, so third-party spools need the material and color selected manually in Bambu Studio or on the printer.

Is it cheaper to buy the Combo or add the AMS Lite later?

On 2026-10-28 the US store priced the A1 at $259 and the A1 Combo at $359, both on sale. The AMS Lite alone was $159, so if you expect to want multi-color printing, buying the Combo up front is the cheaper path.

Does the A1 Combo need assembly?

Bambu publishes an official unboxing guide for the A1 Combo on its wiki. Setup involves mounting and connecting the AMS Lite and its PTFE tubes, and the store says the printer then calibrates itself automatically.

Verdict

Buy the A1 Combo if you know you want multi-color PLA or PETG prints and a large bed without the cost of an enclosed printer. Look elsewhere if you need more than 4 filaments per print or plan to print ABS, ASA or engineering materials.
