Overview

The Neptune 4 Max is Elegoo's largest Neptune 4 printer, with a 420 x 420 x 480 mm build volume and Klipper firmware rated up to 500 mm/s and 8,000 mm/s2. It uses a 300°C hotend, a dual-gear direct extruder and 121-point auto leveling. It sells for $394 on Elegoo's US store, against a $559.99 regular price.

What it is

The Elegoo Neptune 4 Max is a large-format, open-frame bed slinger (the bed moves on the Y axis) in Elegoo's Neptune 4 family. It runs Klipper firmware out of the box and is built for printing big single parts such as helmets, cosplay armor, large enclosures and tall vases. It is still sold on Elegoo's US store. The store now lists a Ribbon-Cable Version and a Type-C Version, and only the Type-C Version is in stock.

Key specs that matter

  • Build volume: 420 x 420 x 480 mm. That is several times the volume of a typical 220 to 256 mm class printer.
  • Speed and motion: up to 500 mm/s with a default of 250 mm/s, and accelerations up to 8,000 mm/s2. Klipper input shaping and pressure advance are supported, and accelerometers on the X and Y axes handle automatic resonance calibration.
  • Hotend: rated to 300°C, with a 60 W ceramic heater, brass heating block and automatic nozzle PID calibration.
  • Extruder: dual-gear direct drive with a 5.2:1 reduction and a full titanium alloy throat.
  • Leveling: 121-point (11 x 11) automatic mesh leveling, plus hand-twist knobs for manual fine-tuning.
  • Cooling: two 4015 cooling fans and a 3010 blower on the print head, plus two 6025 blowers behind it.
  • Connectivity: Elegoo lists Wi-Fi, WLAN and USB transfer.

Who it suits

The Neptune 4 Max suits makers who regularly hit the limits of a standard-size printer. Cosplay builders, prop makers and anyone printing large functional parts in PLA or PETG can avoid splitting models into pieces and gluing them. The 300°C hotend also covers TPU and nylon-class materials.

What to know before buying

A 420 mm bed slinger needs a lot of space. The bed travels front to back, so allow clearance well beyond the frame footprint, and place it on a sturdy surface, since a heavy moving bed transmits vibration. The 500 mm/s rating is a maximum. Elegoo's own default speed is 250 mm/s, and large, heavy parts often print best slower to avoid ringing and layer shifts.

The printer is open frame. ABS and ASA are hard to print well on a bed this size without an enclosure, because large parts are especially prone to warping and cracking from drafts. If you need those materials, budget for a third-party enclosure or look at an enclosed printer.

Leveling is automatic, but Elegoo also includes manual knobs for fine-tuning. Expect to check and adjust these after moving the printer. Elegoo's global product page lists a maximum bed temperature of only 85 °C (at 25 °C ambient), which is low for materials such as ABS and ASA that usually need a hotter bed. A Neptune 4 Max Starter Bundle with a brass nozzle set and filament is also sold on Elegoo's US store for $436.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • A 420 x 420 x 480 mm build volume lets large helmets, props and enclosures print in one piece instead of several.
  • Klipper firmware with input shaping and pressure advance supports up to 500 mm/s and 8,000 mm/s2 acceleration.
  • The 121-point automatic mesh leveling compensates for bed unevenness across a large print surface.
  • A 300°C hotend with a dual-gear direct extruder handles PLA, PETG, TPU and nylon-class filaments.
  • Elegoo lists Wi-Fi, WLAN and USB file transfer, so jobs can be sent without walking a card to the printer.
  • At $394 on Elegoo's US store, it costs well below its $559.99 regular price for a 420 mm class printer.

Cons

  • Without an enclosure, and with a bed rated to only 85 °C, ABS and ASA are hard to print well, especially at the large part sizes this printer targets.
  • As a bed slinger, the large moving bed needs extra front-to-back clearance and a sturdy surface to limit vibration.
  • Elegoo's default speed is 250 mm/s, so the 500 mm/s maximum is not a realistic everyday printing speed.
  • The leveling system includes manual adjustment knobs that may need rechecking after the printer is moved.
  • There is no built-in multicolor system, so it prints one filament at a time without third-party add-ons.
  • Only the Type-C Version is in stock on Elegoo's US store; the Ribbon-Cable Version shows unavailable.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the Neptune 4 Max build volume?

Elegoo lists 420 x 420 x 480 mm. That is large enough for full-size cosplay helmets and other big parts that would need splitting on a standard printer.

Can the Neptune 4 Max print ABS?

The hotend reaches 300°C, which is hot enough for ABS. However, the printer is open frame, and large ABS parts tend to warp and crack from drafts without an enclosure. Elegoo also lists a maximum bed temperature of 85 °C, which is low for ABS. An aftermarket enclosure helps.

Does the Neptune 4 Max have Wi-Fi?

Yes. Elegoo's product page lists Wi-Fi, WLAN and USB transfer. It runs Klipper firmware, which provides a web interface on the local network.

What is the difference between the Ribbon-Cable and Type-C versions?

Elegoo's US store lists both variants at the same price, but only the Type-C Version is in stock as of October 2026. Elegoo's product data does not detail the difference beyond the name, so check the product page if it matters to you.

Does it work with third-party filament?

Elegoo's product page does not describe any locked or proprietary filament system, so standard third-party spools are the norm for this printer. The 300°C hotend covers common materials such as PLA, PETG and TPU. Use the filament maker's recommended temperatures.

Verdict

The Neptune 4 Max suits makers who need a very large build volume at a moderate price and mainly print PLA, PETG or TPU. Anyone who needs ABS or ASA, a compact footprint or multicolor printing should look at an enclosed or smaller printer instead.
